Every image incurs a penalty of 0.2 seconds and 300 bytes. The time penalty is because the browser needs to send a request to the webserver and ask for the image. The 300 bytes penalty is for the http overhead that accompanies each and every image.

Images are often used more than once in a website, such as the background, logo, and navigation buttons. They are loaded only once into the cache of the browser, usually on the homepage. You can therefore disregard those images on sub-pages.
