Unable to send mail while connected to AT&T/SBC DSL
Posted January 12, 2005
If you are having problems sending mail through SunStar Media's mail server (mailhost.ssmedia.com) and are a AT&T/SBC Yahoo! DSL customer, this is due to the "Port 25 Filter" that AT&T/SBC has implemented for most of its DSL customers. (AT&T's DSL's informational page on this matter.)
The "Port 25 Filter" essentially blocks sending SMTP mail using Port 25 for all mail servers other than AT&T/SBC's SMTP server. While this is a good thing overall, as it will result in less spam and viral-generated email messages from being sent via AT&T/SBC's DSL accounts, it has resulted in SunStar Media customers being unable to send mail using current configurations.
Solution:
Convert your outbound SMTP server settings in Outlook or similar email program to SBC's mail server.
- Change the outbound SMTP server from mailhost.ssmedia.com to smtp.att.yahoo.com
- If using Outlook:
- The box next to Log on using Secure Password Authentication is NOT checked.
- The My server requires authentication box is checked.
- Click on "Settings" next to My server requires authentication.
- Select Log on using
- Under Account Name, enter your full SBC Yahoo! email address (e.g., yourname@sbcglobal.net)
- Under Password, enter your SBC Yahoo! password
- Click the Advanced tab.
- The Outgoing mail (SMTP) should be port 465 and the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL) is checked.
