Intermittant Email error (553) when sending mail using AT&T Yahoo's SMTP Service

Posted March 20, 2008

If you are encountering an intermittant error (553) in your email client, when sending non-AT&T/Yahoo-branded email through the AT&T/Yahoo SMTP server, (in Outlook, the error code is 0x800CCC0F), here is a recap of the error message and the current solution.

These is the typical message received:

Task '[AccountName]-Sending' reported error (0X800CCC0F): 'The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). The server responded: 553 From: address not verified; see http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/manage/sendfrom-07.html'

This behavior was first reported to us during the week of 3/20/2008. It occurs when the following conditions are true:

  1. You are using sending authenticated SMTP mail through AT&T/Yahoo's SMTP server ("smtp.att.yahoo.com" or "smtp.mail.yahoo.com")
  2. You are sending email messages from a non-AT&T/Yahoo controlled email address

Yahoo has apparently added a new feature/policy that requires users who utilize its SMTP service to "verify" any non-Yahoo controlled email accounts in order to continue using the service. This policy is apparently a response to increased spam sent through its servers.

To fix the issue, please follow the instructions listed on the page linked from the original error message displayed in your email client:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/manage/sendfrom-07.html.

The fix consists of the following steps:

  1. Logging-in to the Yahoo Web Mail site at http://mail.yahoo.com (using your AT&T/Yahoo DSL email address and password)
  2. Clicking on "Options", then "Mail Addresses"
  3. Adding your non-Yahoo controlled email address(es) to the list of mail accounts, and selecting the option of having Yahoo send a Verification message to the email account(s) in question
  4. Clicking the Verification Link sent to the email address

If you have any additional questions about these or other Outlook error messages, please contact us.
