Setup your SunStar Media email account using Mozilla Thunderbird

Posted August 24, 2007

Here are step-by-step instructions for setting up your email box using Mozilla Thunderbird.

1.) Open Mozilla Thunderbird, and go to "Tools | Account Settings".

2.) Select "Email Account", then click "Next".

3.) Enter your Identity.

  • User Information:
    • Your Name: Your Full Name
    • Email Address: Your Email Address
  • Click "Next".

4.) Enter the Server Information.

  • Server Information:
    • Type of Incoming Server: POP
    • Incoming Server: mailhost.ssmedia.com
      • Note: If you are using the Self Serve Hosting / Uniquefocus server (instead of the base SunStar Media server), enter "mail.yourdomain.com" for the POP3 Server Name.
    • Use Global Inbox: This is user-defined and checked by default. If you are using more than one account, you may wish to un-check this option to have separate inboxes for each mail account.
    • Outgoing Server: Enter your ISP's SMTP server.
      • In this example, we will be using AT&T/SBC Yahoo! DSL, where you would enter "smtp.att.yahoo.com"
      • If you are using another ISP, here are some alternative SMTP servers:
        • Comcast: "smtp.comcast.net"
        • Earthlink: "smtp.earthlink.net"
        • MontereyBay.com: "smtp.montereybay.com"
        • Monterey Bay Internet (MBay): "mail.mbay.net"
        • Redshift: "smtp.redshift.com"
      • In rare instances (if you cannot send through your ISP), you may send through SunStar Media. In this case, enter "mailhost.ssmedia.com".
    • Click "Next".

5.) Enter User Names.

  • Logon Information:
    • Incoming User Name: Your Email Address
    • Outgoing User Name: Your ISP Email Address
      • In rare instances (if you cannot send through your ISP), you may send through SunStar Media. In this case, enter Your Email Address (same as Incoming User Name).
    • Click "Next".

6.) Account Name.

  • Enter a user-definable name for your Email Account, then click "Next".

7.) Click "Finish".

8.) Account Settings.

  • You will see your email account listed on the next screen.

9.) Changing the SMTP Sending Port:

If you need to change the SMTP Sending Port (For example, if you are an AT&T/SBC Yahoo! DSL customer, or if you are sending through SunStar Media), select/highlight "Outgoing Server (SMTP)", then click "Edit".

  • Settings:
    • Port: AT&T/SBC Yahoo! DSL users - enter "465".
    • Port: Sending through SunStar Media - enter "587".
  • Security and Authentication:
    • User Name and Password: Keep this checked unless your ISP requires non-authentication.
    • Use Secure Connection: AT&T/SBC Yahoo! DSL users (or if your ISP requires it) - select "SSL".
    • Use Secure Connection: Sending through SunStar Media/Others - select "No".
  • Click "Ok", and then "Ok".

6.) Congratulations. You have successfully entered all the information required setup your account.
